Friday, Typhoon Etau bore down on Japan's southern mainland
following it grazing of the Ryukyu Islands. Before daybreak, EDT, the
eye of Etau was 55 miles southwest of Muruoto Misaki, Shikoku, Japan.
Headed towards the northeast at nearly 20 mph, Etau packed highest
sustained winds of 105 mph. At the time, sustained winds of 90-100 mph
were clocked at Muruoto Misaki, an exposed headland on southeastern
Shikoku. Landfall was certain in southeastern Shikoku and southwestern
Honshu. Afterwards, Etau was seen following the axis of Japan before
ending up over the southern Sea of Okhotsk within about 48 hours.
Japan's rugged spine of mountains will, no doubt, shave much of the
storm's wind strength, but it will also boost rainfall in favored
sites leading to flash flooding and maybe landslides.
Etau, in its clash with Japan's Ryukyu Islands, unleashed
hurricane gusts. On Okinawa, Kadena observed gusts of 85 to 105 mph
in the strongest squalls of Etau Thursday evening, local time. The
city of Naha, also hit with hurricane gusts, collected rainfall of
6.3 inches. Rainfall at Naze, on Amami O Shima, was 9.8 inches within
36 hours.
Much of France endured 100-degree heat again on Thursday, and
there were readings just as high in other parts of western Europe as
the region remained in the throes of a nasty heat wave. Paris
registered a high of 102 degrees; it was the third straight day to
reach 100 or greater despite an average high in the middle 70s. Even
hotter spots in France were Mont-de-Marsan, Montelimar and Troyes,
each of which soared to 104 degrees. Topping the list of hot spots in
Spain were Cordoba at 105 degrees and Logrono at 104, although there
were many readings of 100-103. In Portugal, highs were generally
94-100 degrees along the coasts and 100-106 degrees inland. Highs in
northern and western Italy, Switzerland, western Germany and the Low
Countries were widely in the middle and upper 90s, but there were some
100-degree marks as well. Cagliari, island of Sardinia, Italy, spiked
to 104 degrees, for example. In Germany, Frankfurt reached 101. The
high heat waned somewhat in the United Kingdom on Thursday, but
Tuesday's and Wednesday's highs were impressive. For some parts, these
were the hottest days in 40-70 years. Wednesday's maximum of 97.5
degrees Fahrenheit (36.4 degrees Celsius) at Gravesend-Broadness, just
outside of London, was said to be the highest reading in the UK in
more than 13 years. The alltime UK record high -- 98.8 degrees F (37.1
C)-- withstood the heat through Thursday.
