A reminder of something most of us know, and that is, lightning can
strike quite a distance outside the thunderstorm area. This happened
this afternoon here in NW South Carolina. I was monitoring a strong
thunderstorm that was passing about 5-7 miles to my north. Since the
storm was moving steadily out of my area, and the sun was out, I
decided I would begin mowing my grass. As I started outside to begin
my chore, I remembered this fact about lightning, and decided to wait
a few more minutes. I had been back in the house about ten minutes,
and it happened. We experienced a very close strike, which caused
the windows in our house to shake! The thunderstorm by this time was
about 8-10 miles from my location, and there were no more storms in
the area. I was very thankful that I was not sitting on my mower,
when that happened. By the way, my brother that lives where the
thunderstorm tracked, received 1.80" of rain in about 45 minutes!
Again, please do not go outside during thunderstorm activity, until
you are sure the storm has passed a safe distance from your
location...doesn't matter if the sun is shining. Have a safe summer!
Jack
