August 5, 2003 10:08 a.m.

Massive Typhoon Etau has strengthened further over the western North
Pacific Ocean. Tuesday, before daybreak, EDT, the core of this big
storm was over the open Philippine Sea some 530 miles southeast of
Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Etau was drifting towards the northwest at 10
mph packing top sustained winds above 95 mph. Etau was forecast to
strengthen into a dangerous typhoon within 24 to 36 hours before
threatening Japan's Ryukyu Islands, perhaps Okinawa amongst them. A
sweeping curve towards the north and northeast would determine
weather Etau struck directly or brushed the sub-tropical islands.
Later in the week, Etau may be a visitor to the mainland of Japan.

Tuesday, the core of a severe heat wave settled over France
having migrated out of Iberia over the last few days. Monday, Bilbao,
Spain, reached at least 115 degrees, or 43 degrees above the average
high for the date. In France, 107 degrees was observed at Gourdon and
Mont de Marsan. Toulouse and Bordeaux hit 105. These highs were
nearly 30 degrees above daily means. Early Tuesday afternoon, the
Orly airport outside of Paris read 99 degrees. It was 100 degrees
from Metz in the northeast, to Saint Brieuc in Brittany. Bourges,
smack in the middle, showed 102 degrees. Turning to Italy, Tuesday's
was but another in a string of sweltering afternoons. The 104-degree
mark was reached at historic Firenze and at Grosseto, northwest of
Rome. Farther north, Istrana and Ferrara had at least 102 degrees.

Monday turned rather hot in England, too, as high temperatures in
the 80s were widespread away from the coasts. London's Heathrow
airport reached 89 degrees whereas an average day in early August
would have a high of 71.

Some unusually heavy rains hit parts of Canada's vast and remote
Nunavut province during the weekend. In the northwest, 48-hour
rainfall ended late Sunday was 2.1 inches at Kugluktuk. Formerly known
as Coppermine, this town is located on the Coronation Gulf at the
mouth of the Coppermine River. The average August rainfall here is
only 1.6 inches and the average yearly precipitation is 9.4 inches.

Through Monday, the summer had been abnormally dry and hot on the
Bermuda Islands. From June 25 through Monday afternoon, only 1.2
inches of rain was collected here whereas the average rainfall during
this span is 5.9 inches. The average temperature during this dry spell
was 3 degrees above the climatological mean, and Monday was the 7th
day out the last 8 to have 90-degree heat.

Sialkot, in the far-northeast of Pakistan, had three-day
rainfall of 11.2 inches as of Monday evening, local time. This was
more than the mean monthly rainfall for August, the wettest month of
the year, and about one-third of the mean yearly rainfall.
