My target of Throckmorton was not too bad yesterday even though I
proceeded
to Haskell and then had to back track. If I had stayed at
Throckmorton, I
probably would have caught the tornado in Young Co. but I would not
have
traded my storm for a brief tornado any day.
When I arrived at Munday, I could see cells rapidly exploding near
Seymour
in Baylor Co.. I went a little East towards Millers Creek Resorvoir
to
observe the cells. Dave Fick called and said that the cell I was
watching
did not look as impressive as the Archer Co. cell and that if I could
high
tail it towards Olney, I would be in good shape.
I had to take the long way around due to poor road networks. SE of
Seymour,
the cell to the East moving into Young Co., did not look that
impressive
from the backside and I would have had to core punch it to get to the
other
side for a better view. As I was trying to make a decision, I looked
over
my shoulder to the SW and there was a cell trying to form in NE
Throckmorton Co. near Elbert.
This cell initially took on the appearance of a LP with little or no
precip
for approximately 45 minutes. It had a DITOR on it and reported
funnels
with it. I did not see any funnels but I did leave it for about 20
minutes
in order to get better position. I have determined that the verified
tornado report came from the cell to the East and not mine.
Near Olney, You could hear a constant roar coming from just above
which I
thought was thunder but Jim Leonard was talking about the sound being
the
hail aloft. I have always heard of chasers hearing that sound but it
was my
first time or maybe I just did not realize it on previous chases. It
was
amazing!!
On the West side of Possum Kingdom Lake near South Bend, I could tell
that
new cells to the East were cutting off the inflow to my cell and it
was
decaying quickly. I gave up after a great chase and as I was between
Palo
Pinto and Mineral Wells, my earlier cell seemed to merge with the
cell on
the East side of the lake and it started to strengthen and I
witnessed a
storm with a beautiful beaver's tail.
On the way home, got a great lightning show with lots of anvil
crawlers!!

although my
digital camera did not do this storm proper justice.
Thanks to Steve Miller and Dave Fick for the updates.
