[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Sunday, Jun 15

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Sun Jun 15 2003 - 10:40:01 EDT

June 15, 2003 8:16 a.m.

Sunday, after a brush with eastern Philippines, Tropical Storm
Soudelor took a more northerly tack over the western Philippine Sea.
As of early morning, EDT, the core of Soudelor was about 340 miles
east-northeast of Manila, or within 150 miles northeast of Catanduanes
Island. The storm was headed northwards at 9 mph with highest
sustained winds of 50 mph. Soudelor was forecast head mostly towards
the north over the next two to three days, maybe gaining typhoon
status along the way. After affording northern Luzon a wide berth
within 12 to 24 hours, Soudelor would become a threat to the Ryukyu
Islands of Japan early next week.

In its brush with eastern Philippines, Soudelor unloaded
torrential rains. Within no more than 24 hours, rainfall on
Catanduanes and northern Samar islands was 10-15 inches including 13
inches at Catarman, Samar.

Much of southwestern Europe endured abnormally hot weather again
on Saturday. During the afternoon, 90-degree and higher heat was
widespread across Spain, southern France and Italy, and there were
hotter spots, too. In eastern Spain, highs were 101, 100 and 100
degrees, respectively, at Lerida, Zaragoza and Murcia. Southern France
had 101-degree top marks at both Toulouse and Montelimar as well as a
100-degree high in Gourdon; average mid-June highs in these three
sites vary from 72 to 77. Firenze (Florence), Italy, soared more than
20 degrees above average in reaching 101. Also in Italy, Grosseto
spiked to 102. There were some highs in the 90s in central Europe as
well. Geneva, Switzerland, climbed to 94 degrees versus an average
high of 72.

As of midday Sunday, cooling trimmed the heat wave in western
Europe, at least from France to western Spain and Portugal. But in
Italy, there were temperatures well into the 90s with further rises
to go.

Sunday, rains were fairly plentiful over the southern and
northeastern subcontinent of India. Along western shores of India,
which feels the full brunt of the rain-bearing southwesterly monsoon,
three-day rainfall as of Sunday was more than 5 inches at Goa. East
of the Ghats, scattered showers and thunderstorms helped to trim the
lengthy and stifling heat wave that killed hundreds of people in such
states as Andhra Pradesh.
