As of Monday morning, EDT Tropical Cyclone Gina is weakening
quickly between New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Dissipation as a named
cyclone seemed imminent.
Withering heat hung over Pakistan again Monday, albeit with the
slightest slip in temperatures. Of the observations made Monday, none
showed 120 degrees for the first time in one week. Thus, at
Jacobabad, a string of consecutive 120-degree days was broken --
barely -- at seven straight, as Monday's high was "only" 119. Highs
of 119 degrees were also set at Sibi and at Nawabshah whereas Pad
Idan registered 118. Meantime, much of India still sweltered in a
deadly heat wave prolonged by the delay in summer's rainy monsoon. In
the hard-hit east, the states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa showed many
highs of 105-115 degrees.
Abnormal heat reached far northwards in Russia's Siberian
hinterland. Highs to about 90 degrees were set in Yakutiya, also
called the Sakha republic, and in the districts of Krasnoyarsk and
Irkutsk. In northwestern Yakutiya, Shelagontsy, often world's daily
cold spot in winter, reached 88 degrees, or about 30 degrees above
the average high for the day.
