Tropical Storm Chan-Hom, now weakening while racing
northeastwards, will soon loose storm status over the North Pacific
Ocean far from any land.
Tuesday, Tropical Storm Linfa landed from the west on Luzon
Island, Philippines. Before daybreak, EDT, Linfa was inland some 115
miles north of Manila, and within 40 miles of Dagupan. Highest
sustained winds were about 50 mph, and the storm drifted eastbound at
about 8 mph. Linfa was forecast to wrap up its trek across Luzon
within 12 hours before swinging towards the northeast over the open
Philippine Sea; here, strengthening was seen to be likely. Meantime,
Linfa was unloading torrents of rain over western Luzon. Over
Dagupan, Linfa poured 14.9 inches of rain within 6 hours, and 19.9
inch in all; it was still pouring late Tuesday evening, local time.
Within 36 hours, rainfall was 10.0 over Iba, and 9.4 inches at Baguio.
Manila itself was swamped and the nearby Sangley Point air base
registered 8.1 inches of rain.
Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, set a high of 84 degrees Tuesday
even though the average high for the date would be 42 degrees.
Overnight, the low was 59 degrees whereas the average low would be
27. As late as the second day of May, the high was 18 degrees, and
the low, 2.
