HIGH RES SAT SHOT SHOWS STORM ON MAY 26TH...

"Even relatively small cyclones can have dire affects for people in their
paths, as is evidenced by the widespread destruction left in Cyclone 01B's
wake, shown here in this true-color Terra MODIS image from May 11, 2003. In
this image, 01B whirls to the northeast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean
off India's Coromandel Coast. Following 01B's passage, landslides, flash
floods, and almost constant rainfall have resulted in the displacement of
150,000 Sri Lankans, 200 deaths, the destruction of much of Sri Lanka's
dairy and rice farms, and the loss of many already harvested and stored
crops. The cyclone hits the region only a few days after Tropical Cyclone
Manou made landfall on Sri Lanka's eastern coast on May 8, 2003. Normally,
Sri Lanka does not normally experience natural disasters of this magnitude,
though cyclones are common in the region. The scale of destruction in Sri
Lanka has prompted India to provide economic and physical aid."

SATELLITE ESTIMATED PRECIP SHOWS OVER 10" OF RAIN...

"During the past few days (May 15-19, 2003) Tropical Cyclone 01B developed
in the Indian Ocean and achieved hurricane status for a few hours. However,
the storm has produced copious amounts of rainfall leading to a large loss
of life in Sri Lanka. The heavy rain accumulation, exceeding nine inches,
is shown in the accompanying image. The rain accumulation map was produced
using the TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis
(MPA) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. NASA's TRMM or Tropical
Rainfall Measurement Mission features a spaceborne weather radar built by
the Japanese space agency NASDA. In operation for five years, TRMM has
provided unprecedented views of tropical rain events around the globe, and
now also provides information on flash flood potential (accessed by
visiting the TRMM website at trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov).

In this image, note the huge rainfall footprint produced by Tropical
Cyclone 01B as it intensified over the Bay of Bengal. At first, it would
appear that the isolated rainfall pocket located over Sri Lanka bears
little relation to the burgeoning tropical storm. However, there is
evidence to suggest that the rainstorms that deluged Sri Lanka were
associated with an outer "feeder band" of moisture entering the tropical
cyclone from the southwest."

"Tropical Cyclone <../../../../../img/climate/research/2003/may/01b.htm>01B
developed in the Bay of Bengal on the 11th and drifted slowly northward.
Locally heavy rain bands affected Sri Lanka northward across the east
central coast of India during May 12-17. The cyclone made landfall
<../../../../../img/climate/research/2003/may/01b-pg.htm>along the west
central coast of Burma on the 19th with maximum sustained winds near 85
km/hr (45 knots or 50 mph)."
