AFP, Beijing

"May 20: Southwest China was bracing for torrential rain and landslides
Tuesday, but water levels crested in the country's interior, calming fears
of more flooding that has killed at least 68, officials said.

As the danger passed in central China, local officials were left assessing
the toll exacted by the floods, reporting 68 fatalities and another 29
people missing, many of them believed dead.

In Hunan province, water levels in the area's main river, Xiangjiang, have
dropped to 37 meters (122 feet), still two meters above danger levels, but
down from Monday's 39 meters, a provincial official told AFP."
