"MetService forecaster Bob Lake said freak tornadoes could occur when the
air temperature and wind direction reached certain levels and reacted.
Mr Lake said heavy rain and thunderstorms earlier in the weekend had caused
other unusual phenomenons in the Auckland region.
A small twister caused minor damage in the suburb of Browns Bay on Saturday
afternoon.
About six homes in Inverness Rd and Beach Rd were struck for a few minutes
just before 3pm, causing roof tiles to be lifted and breaking television
aerials.
East Coast Bays firefighters said torrential rain preceded the twister.
A harbourmaster saw up to four water spouts in the Hauraki Gulf / Waitemata
Harbour."
