QUOTES:
"SCHOOLS and businesses have been closed, flights cancelled and an
evacuation centre set up as a strengthening Cyclone Fay bears down on the
West Australian coast.
Fay was upgraded to category three overnight as gale-force winds and heavy
rains buffeted coastal and island communities between Cape Leveque and
Pardoo, on the Kimberley coast.
The Fire and Emergency Services Association (FESA) said about 100 trees had
been uprooted by destructive winds around Cape Leveque.
At 6am (WST), Fay was estimated to be 150km west-south-west of Cape Leveque
and 110km north-northwest of Broome, moving south at 8kph.
Winds are gusting at up to 190km/h near the cyclone's centre.
"Severe Tropical Cyclone Fay is moving on a southerly track but is expected
to turn towards the south-southwest during today," the Bureau of
Meteorology said.
"Destructive winds with gusts to 150km/h are possible on the Kimberley
coast between Cape Leveque and Bidyadanga today, gradually extending to the
eastern Pilbara tonight."
