Tropical Cyclone Fay has lost strength while edging nearer to the
northwest shores of Australia. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Fay is
centered about 90 miles northwest of Broome, Western Australia, a vast
state on the Island Continent. Still packing top sustained winds above
90 mph, Fay is drifting towards the south-southwest at 3-4 mph. Fay
will be of increasing threat for landfall in northwestern Australia
within the next day or two.
The latest tropical cyclone to be named is "Oscar". Late Wednesday
morning, EST, Oscar is over the South Indian Ocean, nearest land being
Australia's remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands some 215 miles to the
northeast. The storm holds top sustained winds of 60-65 mph; it is
headed towards the west at 9 mph. Further strengthening on an
open-water, southwesterly tack is forecast for the next two days.
A third southern cyclone is weak and dissipating over the western
South Indian Ocean. Late Wednesday morning, EST, this cyclone is more
than 500 miles northeast of the northern tip of Madagascar. Its top
sustained winds are only 20-25 mph, and the storm is nearly stationary.
A mighty snow storm has left a deep mantle of fresh snow atop the
northern Alps. Germany's high spot, Zugspitze, which has a weather
station near its top, picked up 57 fresh inches of snow having water
equivalent of 5.2 inches. The storm happened over about 42 hours
beginning early Tuesday, local time. In Austria, recent snowfall was
about three feet atop Sonnblick.
Sweltering, but for the northwest, which has cooled slightly, the
Indian Subcontinent Wednesday hosted plenty of 100-degree heat once
again. Standing out were Jamshedpur, in the east, and Sholapur, in
the south; both reached 108 degrees -- well above average for the
date. Even the foot of Nepal's Himalaya sweltered: Bhairawa reached
103 degrees.
Tuesday night, freakish warming sent the temperature far above
average daytime levels in Beirut, Lebanon. After reaching 79 degrees
Tuesday afternoon, a mark which was more than 10 degrees above the
mean high for the date, the temperature dipped to 70 Tuesday evening.
Late at night, the temperature rose above 80 degrees peaking at 84 in
the hours before sunrise. An average day here in late March has a
high in the upper 60s.
Much above-average warmth spread into southeastern Ukraine
Wednesday. Zaporizhzhya was warmest among many spots reaching the
lower 70s with its 74-degree top mark. Peaking at 73 degrees was the
city of Dnipropetrovs'k. Mean daily highs in these sites are in the
middle to upper 40s at this time of the year.
