March 21, 2004 4:17 p.m.

A powerful thunderstorm hit Chihuahua, Mexico Saturday afternoon.
Rainfall from the storm totaled just over an inch, which is three
times the normal average amount for the month of March. Strong winds
accompanied the storm, and a gust to 56 mph was reported.

Powerful Tropical Cyclone Fay is drifting slowly over the Timor
Sea just off the northwestern coast of Australia. Sunday afternoon,
EST, Fay is 270 miles north-northwest of Broome in the state of Western
Australia. Drifting westward-southwestward at 8 mph, Fay now has
sustained winds of near 140 mph and may continue to strengthen. A
turn more to the south is forecast within the next 24 hours,
increasing the threat of eventual landfall in northwestern Australia.

Sunday, Tropical Storm 02W narrowly missed the eastern part of
Luzon Island, the "big island" of the northern Philippines. By
afternoon, the storm had weakened to a depression and had turned
toward the northeast, heading away from the Philippines. The
depression is expected to continue to weaken while remaining on a
northeasterly path.

Sunday was another exceptionally warm day across southeastern
Europe, with temperatures more typical of summer than early spring.
Highs in the 70s were common over a large area from Greece north to
parts of Ukraine. In Bulgaria, the 80-degree mark was reached at
Svichtov, Veliko Tarnovo and Lovech. These readings are 20 to 30
degrees above normal.

Intense heat gripped a large area of southeastern and
south-central Asia, including India, on Sunday. From Myanmar and
Thailand in the east to Pakistan in the west, high temperatures at
or above 100 degrees were set widely. The hottest of all, indeed, the
hottest spot in the world, was Nawabshah, Pakistan with a high of 112
degrees.
