"RESIDENTS on the Queensland coast from Cooktown to south of Cairns counted
their blessings yesterday as they cleaned up after a weekend of high winds
and heavy rain.
It might have been much worse if an expected cyclone had not taken a
welcome turn to the southeast and back out to sea. State Emergency Service
and road crews were still working last night to clear mud and trees, and
boulders weighing up to 20 tonnes, that slid on to the Captain Cook Highway
on the tourist stretch between Port Douglas and Cairns.
After several days of flooding, the Daintree River ferry was operating
again yesterday, taking day-trippers across the river after they were stuck
in the Daintree forest for several days.
But with the road south of Port Douglas blocked, tourists desperate to
catch flights in Cairns abandoned cars and turned instead to an emergency
ferry from Port Douglas.
Several roads remained closed, including the Bruce Highway south of Cairns,
where the Tully River was still in flood. On Saturday afternoon, SES
workers were rescuing motorists who had driven around the closure signs
only to be swept from the roads."
