NEWS MEDIA ARTICLE (AP):
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (AP)--Thousands of homes and businesses had no
electricity Monday in North Carolina following a storm with wind gusts up
to 70 mph that was blamed for two deaths.
The wind blew down trees and power lines and damaged transformers Sunday.
Fallen power lines were blamed for dozens of home and brush fires.
``We expected a cold front to move through, but we didn't think the wind
would be this ferocious,'' Gaston County Emergency Management Director Jim
Pharr said.
More than 130,000 customers had no power Monday morning, down from more
than 200,000 after the storm struck, utility officials said.

"Although Sampson County reportedly saw the worst of the damage, several
business signs in Dunn were shattered by Sunday's winds and wooden shelters
were blown over at Jernigan's Nursery on U.S. 421. - Daily Record
Photo/Gregory Phillips The sun set yesterday on a gorgeous March afternoon,
but after sunset a storm rolled in and blasted the area with 60 mph wind
gusts.
Temperatures plummeted by 20 degrees in just minutes. The high winds lasted
little more than an hour but caused property damage (particularly to
business signs), left trash cans littering the roads and left many without
power or cable television service. Mike Wood of South River Electric said
6,200 customers lost power
Mr. Wood said outages were caused by debris hitting power lines, including
aluminum carport pieces and tin from barn roofs. He said some trees came
down, including a particularly large one in the Mamers area, but that no
workers or customers were hurt.
Mr. Locklear said wind damage was reported across central North Carolina,
from Winston-Salem to Sampson County. He said the winds passed through
Harnett, Johnston and Sampson counties between 8 and 9:30 p.m. yesterday,
with the highest gusts between 55 and 60 mph.
Tornado in Erwin? Witnesses reported seeing a tornado in the Chicora area
south of Erwin, but Mr. Locklear said that wasn't likely. "I think they
were seeing the front edge of this gust front and it can look very
ominous," he said. When lightning lit the skies, Mr. Locklear said people
may have seen "scud-looking cloud types" they may have mistaken for a tornado."
