Severe Tropical Cyclone Gafilo is drawing closer to northeastern
Madagascar. Saturday afternoon, EST, the eye of this Indian Ocean
storm is 85 miles east of Antalaha, Madagascar. This nasty cyclone
wields highest sustained winds of more than 160 mph as it rolls
west-southwestwards at 10 mph. Landfall over northeastern Madagascar
could happen within 12 hours.
Gafilo has grown to the equivalent of a Category-5 hurricane over
open seas, but it did brush one small speck of land. The island of
Tromelin was lashed by gales most of Friday and Saturday; highest
steady winds were above 50 mph Saturday.
Saturday, thick air-borne dust spanned the breadth of Saharan and
sub-Saharan Africa, even reaching several hundred miles into the
Atlantic Ocean -- a spread of some 4000 miles! Most of this dust had
been raised earlier in the week and has since wafted down wind --
mostly to the south and west. Still, strong winds behind a cold front
invading 100-degree heat Saturday kicked up blinding dust storms over
northern and western Sudan. The dust cloud disrupted air traffic in
some areas.
Saturday, a blizzard wielding winds of nearly 80 sustained mph
shrouded Australia's Mawson station, East Antarctica, in whiteouts.
Temperatures hovered in the mid-teens.
Strong winds buffeted Tbilisi, Georgia, Friday through Saturday.
During this time, sustained winds were mostly 35-45 mph while peak
gusts reached 67 mph. Strong winds also reached into Iran where
Ardebil had wind sustained at 50 mph and visibility a quarter of a
mile in blowing dust.
