"Residents lose power; 20-year-old tree felled
Miller was nearby, too, late Friday morning when a gust of wind uprooted
the spruce and laid it flat. He and his wife, Mary, had just pulled into
the garage when the 35-foot tree came crashing down, brushing the house.
All day Friday, powerful bursts of wind flattened trees throughout
Michiana, causing widespread power outages, blocking roads and bringing
back memories. The result was sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and
gusts of up to 60 miles per hour,''...
David Mayne, a spokesman for the electric utility AEP, said falling trees
and limbs had knocked out power to about 8,500 customers in St. Joseph and
Elkhart counties by early afternoon.
But that number was down to about 3,200 customers by 10 p.m. as contract
crews were brought in to repair downed lines and to reset circuit breakers
tripped by falling limbs.
About 2,500 Mishawaka Utilities customers on the city's south side lost
power sometime after 11 a.m. after high winds knocked over two poles on
12th Street south of town, general manager Phil Miller said.

QUOTES:
"Courtesy of the low-pressure system that brought balmy temperatures and
intense wind gusts, a tree crashed through the roof of Richard Burns' South
Haven trailer Friday, crushing the kitchen. Elsewhere, people walking
struggled to move against the wind. Tree limbs snapped and took down power
lines with them. In Northwest Indiana, about 4,200 Northern Indiana Public
Service Co. customers lost power.
With the National Weather Service issuing a high-wind warning, Indiana
State Police banned tandem or triple tractor-trailers on the Toll Road for
much of the day. The wind played havoc across Northwest Indiana on Friday
as the region endured winds of 20 to 30 mph. A gust of 69 mph was reported
in Gary before 11 a.m. "
