"High Winds Rip Tree From Ground, Knock Out Power

A high-wind warning has been issued for metro Detroit Friday and some local
homeowners have already seen the effects, Local 4 reported. A large tree
was ripped out of the ground and crashed into two homes on Margaret Street
in the area of Woodward and John R. Road on the city's west side.

The Detroit Fire Department also received word of a tree down at Cherrylawn
and Florence streets, and a large branch that had fallen on a car on
Detroit's west side. Local 4 learned that the sign outside Baker's
Keyboard Lounge on Eight Mile and Livernois was also torn down from the
wind gusts that were reportedly ranging from 40 to 60 mph. The city's fire
department also confirmed that there were several utility poles down across
the city. DTE Energy reported that nearly 2,000 customers in West
Bloomfield were without power due to the weather conditions."

Weather system brings damaging winds, cuts off power to thousands

"(AP) High winds buffeted southern Michigan on Friday, knocking down a
golf dome, trees and a utility poles and leaving tens of thousands of
people without electricity. Heavy rains that ended earlier in the day
along with melting snow because of the warmup prompted the National Weather
Service to issue flood warnings for Arenac, Gladwin, Huron and Saginaw
counties.

As many as 35,000 of DTE Energy's 2.1 million customers were without power
because of the wind, spokesman Scott Simons said. That number had fallen to
18,000 as of 9:30 p.m. EST, including 11,000 in Wayne County, he said.
Power was knocked out to the Fisher Building in Detroit's New Center area,
trapping a few people in elevators, according to broadcast reports. Rescue
workers were able to get them out within an hour. Wind-related power
outages also were reported elsewhere in the Lower Peninsula. Consumers
Energy said about 6,000 of its customers were without service The National
Weather Service said wind gusts reached 58 miles per hour at Detroit
Metropolitan Airport and a high wind advisory was in effect much of the day
Friday for parts of the state. Wind gusts of up to 58 mph were reported in
the Grand Rapids area, according to broadcast reports."
