Tropical Cyclone Gafilo has grown steadily over the open South
Indian Ocean. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Gafilo holds highest
sustained winds of almost 100 mph about an eye which is 505 miles
east-northeast of Antalaha, Madagascar, and 495 miles north of the
main island of Mauritius. The cyclone is moving southwestwards at 9
mph. Forecasts call for Gafilo to strengthen further on southwestward,
open-water heading for the next 36-48 hours. Thereafter, this
dangerous storm could threaten northern Madagascar.
Parts of the Mideast and northeastern Africa sweltered under
unusual wintertime heat on Thursday. Beirut, Lebanon, registered a
high of 91 degrees whereas the average high for the date was 65. The
high in Tel Aviv, Israel, was 97 degrees, or nearly 30 degrees above
the mean daily maximum. Amman, Jordan, soared a full 30 degrees above
average in reaching 88. Highs in the 90s were widespread in
northwestern Saudi Arabia. Among reporting sites, Medina was hottest
with a 99-degree top mark. In Egypt, highest readings came in El
Kharga and Dakhla, both of which reached 105 degrees. El Arish, hard
against the Mediterranean Sea, spiked to 103 degrees. Cairo was far
above its 73-degree average high in topping out at 100.
Wednesday was abnormally cool in portions of northwestern Mexico.
Under overcast, rainy skies, the city of Hermosillo registered no
daytime hourly temperatures above 52 degrees. An average day in early
March would have a high temperature near 81 degrees here.
It's been a rainy week on parts of Indonesia's island of Java
(Jawa). At Tasikmalaya, rainfall was nearly 7.6 inches within 60
hours as of Thursday evening, local time.
A storm system centered near the eastern-most Greek Island of
Rhodes Thursday will skirt across the northeastern part of the
Mediterranean Sea into southern Turkey Thursday night. On the backside
of this storm, strong north to northeasterly winds blasted the Greek
Islands in the Aegean Sea. Milos, Naxos and most other locations
across the Aegean Sea had winds sustained over 40 mph with higher
gusts. Kythira, located between the Ionian Sea and the Sea of Crete
reported sustained winds to nearly 65 mph with higher gusts.
Meanwhile, out ahead of this storm, rainfall totals averaged around a
half inch across northwestern Turkey and northeastern Greece.
Plenty of moisture was streaming into western parts of France
Wednesday night into Thursday off of the Atlantic Ocean. A general
half inch of rain fell across northwestern France. In addition to the
wet weather, winds were rather gusty along with coast.
Although not as widespread as recent days, strong winds continued
to hamper visibility across North Africa Thursday. Djanet, in
southeastern Algeria, and Timimoun, in northwestern Algeria, had
sustained winds over 35 mph with blowing dust dropping visibility
below a mile. Strong winds were also blasting the northern coast of
Libya. Nalut and Misurata both had sustained winds past 50 mph with
higher gusts. Blowing dust was kept to a minimum in these locations as
the strong winds across northern Libya were accompanied by showers and
thunderstorms. Nearly an inch of rain fell at Nalut, just over an inch
and a half at El Khoms and Tripoli reported 1.61 inches of rain.
