"A cyclone packing winds of up to 200kph has battered Vanuatu, uprooting
trees and tearing down some homes in the South Pacific nation's northern
islands and the capital Port Vila.

Tropical cyclone Ivy was on Thursday night passing just west of the island
of Efate, subjecting the capital to the hurricane force winds that earlier
ripped through Vanuatu's northern islands.

Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office director Job Esau said it had
been difficult to get damage assessments from those islands already hit by
Ivy because of communications problems.

The Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre in Nadi, Fiji, warned that
very destructive hurricane force winds would be experienced by islands
close to the centre "with phenomenal seas".
