Mini-tornado rips Uralla
Wednesday, 25 February 2004
WHAT has been described as a 'mini-tornado' ripped through Uralla and
Kingstown areas late on Sunday afternoon, uprooting trees and tearing off
roofs.
Local controller with Uralla's State Emergency Service, Mark Fox, said the
galeforce winds struck the area at about 4.30.
"I'd say it was nearly like a mini-tornado really because the wind itself
wasn't going in a straight line, it was sort of twisting," Mr Fox said.
"It was going one way and then the next minute it was going another way."
The SES crew cut 10 trees off Retreat Rd, just a fraction of what was
actually laying on the edge of the road, Mr Fox said.
"A woolshed on a property called 'The Plateau' lost its whole roof - now
it's wrapped around a tree a couple of hundred metres up the paddock," he said.
A neighbouring property was also hit by the storm, sucking a roller door
right off a machinery shed.
"The roller door has been deposited about 80 metres away and there was
another old shearing shed ... it lost part of its roof too," Mr Fox said.
SES crews spent around five hours covering the woolshed at 'The Plateau'
and clearing away trees.
"We actually had to cut a couple of trees up first so that we could get
there because the road was virtually blocked," Mr Fox said.
