"SAN DIEGO – A powerful storm rolled northward across San Diego County
today causing flooding, mudslides and road closures, but there were no
immediate reports of property damage.
Snow blanketed county mountains, making chains mandatory on the Sunrise
Highway near Mount Laguna and Julian. Roads eventually were plowed but the
snow remained packed and slippery, said Carole Brockman, night supervisor
at the Laguna Mountain Lodge.
A rash of small slides and flooding hit communities from Chula Vista to
Valley Center as driving rain caused 262 accidents between midnight and 6
p.m. and sent emergency workers scrambling to rescue a child from a Chula
Vista storm drain. Despite hundreds of accidents, the CHP said that by 4
p.m. only one eight-car pileup yesterday morning on Interstate 15 near
Highway 76 left anyone with serious injuries.
In the city of San Diego, police at about noon closed off westbound Otay
Valley Road in the South Bay because of flooding, SDPD Sgt. Joe Molinoski
said.
Police reported 6 inches of water and a swath of sand 15 feet wide across
the road at Jackson Drive and Mission Gorge Road, and flooding at Dairy
Mart and Monument roads in San Ysidro.
El Cajon and Crest were hit hard, with mud and rocks the size of melons
running across La Cresta Road. On Vista del Verde, emergency crews
responded to reports of water threatening homes.
