"While the heavy rain which poured across the nation over the weekend eased
farmers' fears of drought, it also flooded major roads and triggered
accidents such as fires and blackouts.
More than 96 millimeters of rain fell in Masan, South Kyongsang Province
from Saturday, with Namhae seeing 90 mm, Koje with 77.5 mm, Pusan with 62.5
mm and Seoul with 52.5 mm, weather officials said. In the Cholla regions,
Yosu saw 68 mm of rainfall, Namwon had 39 mm and Sunchon with 38.5 mm.
On Saturday at around 8 p.m., electricity was cut off in more than 500
homes in Tongjak-gu, Seoul, for an hour after lighting struck the power
distributor of a telegraph pole in the area, police said. In
Tongdaemun-gu, a fire presumed to have been started by a short circuit
broke out in front of a movie theater, while a telephone pole collapsed in
Panghwa-dong in northwestern Seoul.
Meanwhile on Saturday, midday high temperatures in the city of Cheju in
Cheju Province climbed to 24.5 degrees Celsius, recording the warmest
weather on the southern island in February since 1930."
