[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Friday, Feb 20

February 20, 2004 6:39 p.m.

Friday, at daybreak, the worst of a severe Atlantic blizzard over
eastern Canada had come and gone. In its wake lay a fresh mantle of
snow one to three feet deep over Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island
and eastern New Brunswick. The Shearwater military station near
Halifax, NS, picked up 37 inches of snow within 30 hours. Yarmouth,
NS, added 33 new inches whereas Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, which
saw a turnover to sleet and rain, measured 18 inches. Charlottetown,
PEI, was buried with 31 inches by the storm, and Moncton, NB, 25
inches. The "blizzard" moniker was fitting, as storm wielded winds of
30 to 60 mph inland, and above hurricane strength in gust along the
water.

A surge of North Atlantic "warmed" sought Friday to rout arctic
cold from northern Russia; success varied. The ice-free port of
Murmansk, for instance, reached 41 degrees, which made a mockery of
February's mean high of 18. Winds of at least 70 mph swept off the
open Barents Sea at Malyye Karmakuly on Novaya Zemlya, boosting the
temperature to 25 degrees -- 15 degrees above average. Meantime,
arctic cold bordering the southern Barents Sea was far harsher to
start, and it yielded grudgingly. Indiga, which earlier this
week set a string of minus-30 degree days Friday reached 10 degrees,
but not without a fight: winds roared at 40 to 50 sustained mph
leading to all-out whiteouts. The severe blizzard spread eastward to
the edge of the Kara Sea at Amderma, where the temperature climbed to
zero from 25 below.

More 110s in South Australia Friday. A high were 114 was set at
Oodnadatta, Leigh Creek and Tarcoola. Coober Pedy soared to at least
115 degrees. And the heat did not keep to the confines of the
"outback"; winds gusted above 40 mph as Melbourne, Victoria,
registered 105 degrees.

A cold front instigated soaking rains in parts of northwestern
Honduras Wednesday into Thursday. The seaside city of La Ceiba
was doused by 11.5 inches of rain as of early Thursday afternoon.

Friday morning was the coldest so far in what has been an
unusually mild winter in Moscow, Russia. Friday's morning low was
minus-8 degrees versus an average daily low near 10 degrees above
zero. Despite a cold spell this mid- and late-week, the average
temperature in this capital city was 7 degrees above the mean from
December 1st through Thursday.

Strong, sand- and dust-whipping winds lashed much of central and
northern Algeria on Friday, thereby severely cutting visibilities. In
the north, sustained winds 45-60 mph raked Tiaret; dust-filled air
lowered the visibility to 1/2 of a mile or less. Sustained winds near
40 mph and visibilities of 1/2 of a mile or less were measured at El
Kheiter, Timimoun, El Golea and Adrar. Observations at El Golea and
Adrar showed a visibility of just 1/16 of a mile.
