Another hot afternoon Wednesday on the desert heart of Australia.
At Oodnadatta, South Australia, the blistering high of 115 degrees
befit preceding respective highs of 113 and 116 degrees reached Monday
and Tuesday. And nighttimes were hot -- near 90 degrees. The weather
data were much the same at Marree, South Australia. Far to the west,
the city of Perth, Western Australia, Wednesday had its third-straight
day of 100-degree heat (103 degrees, actually) and given the humidity,
apparent temperature to at least 110 degrees.
Tuesday night and Wednesday, gales ripped southeastern South
Island, New Zealand. An automated weather station at Castlepoint
clocked winds of a steady 70 mph early Wednesday morning. Also in the
"Roaring Forties", but in southern Tasmania, Australia, Maatsuyker
Island late Wednesday showed steady winds of at least 55 mph.
Soekarno-Hatta airport, Java, Indonesia, near Jakarta, as of
Wednesday had rainfall of 7.5 inches since Monday.
Highs were minus-28 and minus-27 degrees, respectively, Tuesday
and Wednesday at Indiga, northwestern Russia. An average day near the
middle of February would have a high of 10 degrees above zero at this
port town on the Barents Sea, so these marks were nearly 40 degrees
below average.
A cold front instigated soaking rains in parts of northwestern
Honduras Wednesday. The seaside city of La Ceiba was doused by at
least 2.6 inches of rain as of late in the afternoon. At nearby Tela,
4.7 inches of rain poured down in only six hours early in the day.
Drenching showers and thunderstorms unloaded 5.6 inches of rain
within 24 hours ended Wednesday morning, local time, near Denpasar,
island of Bali, Indonesia.
Unusual wintertime heat built over a small part of western Mexico
on Wednesday. In northern Sinaloa, the town of Choix soared to 97
degrees by early afternoon.
