February 14, 2004 4:20 p.m.

Blistering desert heat Saturday burned its way into cities of
southern and southeastern Australia. Middle 110s were reached in the
states of South Australia and Victoria, and likely reached into
southwestern New South Wales. Port Augusta, South Australia, saw 115
degrees; Ouyen, Victoria, and Lameroo, South Australia, were at least
as hot. Within the city of Adelaide, South Australia, 112 degrees was
reached; a high in the lower 80s would be more fitting. The usually
moderate city of Melbourne, Victoria, hit 105 degrees (107 and 29
degrees above average at main airport).

Saturday, a wild winter storm waned over Greece and western
Turkey, but not before leaving deep, wind-drifted snowfall in some
unfamiliar spots. Snow was said to be as deep as 20 inches in the city
of Athens, Greece, which had traffic snarled by the snow and well over
100 flights cancelled from Athens International Airport. Snow whitened
the ground to sea level on some of the Aegean islands, even Crete, the
most southerly amongst them. Gales whipped the snow about. In
northwestern Turkey, the storm was a thoroughgoing blizzard at its
height, what with winds above 50 mph in Istanbul, and above 65 mph at
nearby Bandirma. Snowfall at Bandirma was at least 18 inches. Farther
east, Bolu early Saturday registered a snow depth of 25 inches. Oddly,
perhaps, even as the snows were flying in northwestern Turkey, the
northeast Friday afternoon saw 71 degrees at Giresun along the Black
Sea.

The above storm swept farther southeast over the eastern
Mediterranean and into Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Jordan on Saturday.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong wins pummelled the coast while
rain changed to snow in the mountains. Snow fell around Jerusalem and
eastward to Amman, Jordan, slowing or stopping travel in the
mountainous areas.

Abnormal warmth born of downcast (chinook-like) winds from Iran's
Alborz Mountains Saturday wafted near the southern shores of the
Caspian Sea. Gorgan warmed to at least 85 degrees, and Rasht, to at
least 82. These readings were 40 to 45 degrees above the average daily
high.

Saturday, a tropical storm is over the open Philippine Sea.
Saturday afternoon, EST, the un-named storm is 470 miles north-
northwest of Yap, Micronesia. The storm's top sustained winds are
about 50 mph, and it is drifting towards the northeast at 8 mph. A
a sharp turn towards the west and southwest is foreseen with one to
two days.

It's been unusually mild in Iceland in recent days. Friday, for
example, saw the temperature rise to 56 degrees in the north at
Akureyri whereas the average high here at this time of the year is 34.
Moreover, Wednesday and Thursday were no cooler than 44 degrees -- a
full 10 degrees above the daily mean high and nearly 20 degrees above
the daily average low.

Unseasonably warm air surged northward into central sections of
eastern China on Friday. Highs in the 70s were registered as far north
as southern Hebei province at Xingtai. A couple of especially warm
spots were Zhengzhou, Henan, at 75 degrees and Xi'an, Shaanxi, at 74
degrees; both cities have an average temperature of 47 degrees at this
time of the year.
