Winchester, VA

A light mix of freezing rain sleet & snow fell Thursday evening, dusting
the ground before moderate freezing rain arrived about 11pm. Freezing
rain continued, heavy times thru Friday afternoon. Temps fell to 27 at
the onset & rebounded to 30 overnight. It was hovering at 32 late Fri
am, and rose to 34 during the afternoon.

At noon Fri, Norfolk was 73, breaking a daily record.

About 1/4 inch of ice coated trees when I awoke about 11am. It began
melting about noon, & then then fell in ernest between 3 and 6pm.

Widespread rains of well over 1", and many reports over 1.5" came with
this event. The runoff caused a large section of the
Baltimore-Washington NWS CWA to be in a flash flood warning this
afternoon & evening.

I measured 1.45" with the rooftop gauge, and will verify that with the
one in the yard on Sat.

A few river stages have or will peak about flood stage in the
headwaters. It is unclear how widespread the river flooding will be this
weekend. But ice jams will complicate matters.

The temps stayed below 32 for the entire event in some areas NW of my
location. TV reports of ice accumulations of 1 to 1.5" were posted. I
am unsure if that includes sleet on the ground, or was the measurement
on trees alone.

WHAG tv in Hagerstown MD reported that Allegheny Energy had 25,000
without power in
that station's viewing area.

Amazingly, the station only showed a small runoff of water into a storm
drain for the video of "storm damage". That despite the fact if the 1.5"
of ice are true, it would be a major disaster, and less than 40 miles
away.

The winter storm warning had been extended several times, & the final
one had stated the accumulations of more than 1/2" were expected in a
few areas.

Temps are hovering near 32 now, and lingering light showers will move in
overnight. A little more glaize for the morning I suppose.

Next shot after this storm will be Tuesday night.
