[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Thursday, Feb 05

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Thu Feb 05 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

February 5, 2004 6:21 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Elita Thursday is dissipating over the open,
southwestern Indian Ocean after a lengthy and complex interaction with
the island of Madagascar.

Frank is a weakening, open-ocean cyclone over the southern Indian
Ocean. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Frank is 890 miles east of
Mauritius, and 985 miles south of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean
Territory. Frank is packing highest sustained winds of 85-90 mph;
these are down by 20-25 mph in the last 12 hours. The cyclone is
moving toward the southeast at 9 mph. Frank is not, and is unlikely to
become, a threat to any land.

The first four days of February have seen exceptional warmth over
northwestern Europe. A swatch having 15 to 20 degrees above average
has stretched from northern France and locally England through
Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to much of Poland. Amongst the
warmest sites with respect to average has been Hannover, Germany, at
slightly shy of 20 degrees above average. Brussels, Belgium, has been
nearly 19 degrees above average. In Berlin, temperatures overnight,
Wednesday, held in the middle 50s, or nearly 30 degrees above the
mean daily low.

Tuesday night through Wednesday, drenching rains bolstered by heavy
thunderstorms hit the Andean foothills and the nearby Chaco of far
northern Argentina, northwestern Paraguay and southern Bolivia. In
Argentina, two-day rainfall was 5.5 at Tartagal.

It's been chilly in parts of Southeast Asia this week. For
example, Bach Long Vi, an island of Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin,
registered a high of 52 degrees both Wednesday and Thursday. These
marks were a full 10 degrees below the daily mean low in early
February and 16 degrees under the daily mean high.

Mornings have been unusually cold in recent days in Bogota, the
Colombian capital, and Thursday had the coldest start yet. The
temperature dipped to 30 degrees early Thursday morning under a mainly
clear sky. Early morning lows were 36, 35 and 34 degrees,
respectively, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The average low at
this time of the year here is 49 degrees, and in fact, the mean daily
low only varies between 49 and 51 degrees throughout the year.

The weather has heated-up in parts of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
In Campeche, for instance, Thursday was the second-straight day to
register 95-degree heat whereas an average day in early February would
have a high near 80 degrees. It's been just as hot in Merida, although
the mean daily high is in the upper 80s here.
