Date: Wed Feb 04 2004 - 21:45:07 EST

Winchester VA

Sorry for the delay for the posting of the information. The month of
January 2004 saw below nomal temps & precip, but normal snowfall.

The mean temperature was 28.14º, or 3 degrees below normal. Precip was
was 1.36", or about 3/4" below normal. Snowfall was 9.85", most it
falling in a week's time near the end of the month (see below).

No cold records fell, but the high of 71 Jan 3rd broke the daily record,
and 70 on Jan 4th tied that's day record. The am low of 60 Jan 4th would
have broken a warm low record, but the Arctic plunge ended that later in
the day. We had a January thaw in the first 5 days, not in the second
half that is normal.

On 12 days the temperature failed to get out of the 20s. In the 2nd
half, the temp only got in the upper 30's or better on three days. The
coldest day was Jan 25th, with a high of 19.

The low fell into the single digits 4 mornings. On 2 of those days, it
was without snow cover. The coldest was 4.1º on Jan 25th.

We had a seasonable average of snow (9.85") which mostly fell between
Jan 25th & 28th.

9" OF SNOW WITHIN 3 STORMS IN 4 DAYS
The first was an Alberta Clipper that was forecast to leave about 1 inch
Fri night & Saturday am. It left 3 inches instead. It trekked closer to
us than forecast. Points about 100 miles south saw nearly nothing, and
south of I-66 saw only a dusting. It had .09" water content, or a 30:1
ratio!

The main storm began about 5pm Sun 1/25 and became heavy between 7 and
9pm. Light to mod snow continued until about 6am Mon. I measured 5.25"
inches, and a water content of .61".

Snow Grains (aka "snizzle), or the snow equilvant of drizzle fell thru
Monday night, when it changed to freezing drizzle. About 1/10" ice
glaize coated the trees.

Light to moderate snow with heavy bursts fell Tuesday Jan 27 between 3 &
7pm. It totaled 1.1".

Winds Wed 1-28th gusted over 30mph drifted the 1" powder into drifts
6-9" deep in the back corner of my yard. In a western section of my
county, a sheriif's deputy reported an intersection blocked by a 4 foot
drift.
