[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Wednesday, Feb 04

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Wed Feb 04 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

February 4, 2004 5:51 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Elita is back out to sea following another trek
across the island of Madagascar. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Elita
is 150 to 200 miles east-southeast of southern Madagascar. Now moving
toward the southwest at 8 mph, Elita has highest sustained winds of 40
mph. This long-traveled storm is forecast to dissipate within one to
two days over the southwestern Indian Ocean.

Frank is still a powerful, open-ocean cyclone over the southern
Indian Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Frank is 800 miles east
of Mauritius, and 845 miles south of Diego Garcia, British Indian
Ocean Territory. Frank owns highest sustained winds of 125-130 mph.
The powerful cyclone is drifting sluggishly towards the southwest at 6
mph. Frank, strong as it is, is of no immediate threat to any land.

The first half of the week has seen spring-like warmth spread
right across northwestern Europe. Having widespread highs of 55 to 60
degrees and locally a few degrees more have been the United Kingdom,
Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, much of Germany and northern France.
High temperatures have been 15 and even 20 degrees above average, and
the mild nights -- northern Germany had mid-fifties Wednesday morning
-- have been as much as 25 degrees above average.

Wednesday brought a large contrast in weather to Indochina. While
northern Vietnam endured an abnormal chill, sweltering heat baked the
region's interior. Hanoi could only muster 54 degrees under a thick
overcast whereas the average high in early February is near 70
degrees. Lang Son, Vietnam, peaked at just 48 degrees while just two
days earlier a high of 80 was registered. Meanwhile, temperatures rose
into the 90s a short distance away in northern Laos. Son La, Vietnam,
and Louangphabang, Laos, are only separated by about 150 miles, yet
the former only reached 53 degrees Wednesday while the latter spiked
to 93. Top readings in the middle and upper 90s were widespread in
Thailand. The heat and humidity made it feel as hot as 113 degrees in
Bangkok as indicated by the AccuWeather RealFeel Temperature (tm).

Tuesday night, heavy thunderstorms and showers hit parts of middle
South America. In far northwestern Argentina, rainfall was 4.2 inches
at Oran and 3.7 inches in Tartagal. Prats-Gil, western Paraguay,
collected 3.8 inches of rain.
