[STORMREPORTS] The blizard of 2003?

Hello from snow bound Michigan. I'm located in Grand Rapids which
is just in from Lake Michigan. We had the strongest and most severe
lake effect snow event in west Michigan in recent memory during a 3
hour period on Tuesday evening. Snow at rates between 3 and 5
inches per hour dropped a quick 7 to 14 inches over a narrow band in
Allegan, Ottawa, and Kent counties. The highest total in the area
is 14 in Walker which is just outside Grand Rapids. The heavy snow
was accompanied by lightning and thunder along with several hours of
winds maintained at 24 miles per hour with gusts as high as 54.
Drifts as high as six feet were common. Needless to say, hundreds
of school districts were closed. The event was complicaited by very
cold wind chils and low temps which have kept salt and other melting
agents from being effective on the roads. Conditions were so bad
that the woods that are 30 feet from my door were invisible in
addition to the other apartment buildings in the area. You could
see just about as far as your hand in front of your face. Even this
afternoon white outs were common as winds continued to gust. Truly
an amazing weather event.
