[STORMREPORTS] Fw: Davis 3SE, WV - 7AM 31 Jan 03 and January Snowfall Totals

From: Roger D Rafler (roger.rafler{at}juno.com)
Date: Fri Jan 31 2003 - 08:08:53 EST

This is from my friend out in Canaan Heights WV. His station is located
at almost 3700 feet elevation.

I thought the members might be interested in his January snowfall totals.
The ski resorts out there are having one of their best seasons within
the past quarter century. Conditions out there all month have been ideal
especially for cross-country skiing, which requires natural snow and
continually below freezing temps.

Canaan Heights is (as you can see below) located 3 miles SE of the town
of Davis WV. On a map of the United States, Davis is about 5 air miles
due south of the extreme southwestern tip of the State of Maryland.

Canaan Heights is over 400 feet higher in elevation than either the town
of Davis or Canaan Valley (located just south of and down the hill from
Canaan Heights) and picks up more snow than either of these sites. It is
definitely located in the Allegany Mountains "snowbelt" extending from
the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania into central West
Virginia.

Also of note is how his daily maximum temps for both 28 and 29 January
occurred around sunrise (as temps rose overnight both days). I often use
his station as a "proxy" for determining whether warm or cold air
advection is occurring at about the 880-900 mb height. Canaan Heights
(Canaan Valley) is located "upstream" from the Washington DC and
Baltimore MD metro areas. What takes place there will usually be taking
place aloft here within a few hours.
