[STORMREPORTS] "Lake Effect" in Florida this morning

From: Tony Cristaldi (tony.cristaldi{at}noaa.gov)
Date: Sat Jan 04 2003 - 08:56:27 EST

No, it's not snow, but a rather unusual sight nonetheless.

First light visible imagery shows fingers, or plumes of lake
enhanced stratus or lower based stratocumulus clouds
(bases {at} 1000 to 1500 feet) stretching downwind from
Lake George and Crescent Lake, near the junction of
Putnam, Flagler and Volusia counties in east central Florida.

The mechanism for this formation, is the right combination of
wind low level wind trajectory, which in this case maximizes
the NNW-SSE fetch length of the lakes, coupled with cold
air advection creating a strong temperature lapse rate over
the relatively warmer lakes.

Perhaps the marshiness of the Saint Johns River Basin may
also be playing a role in enhancing the clouds, especially in
light of the near saturated groundwater conditions..

There also appears to a fainter plume downwind of Lake
Harris in Lake County. However, other lakes in that area
(e.g. Apopka) apparently do not have the right combination
of factors. Perhaps since it is relatively shallower, the lake
temperature would be colder, thus insufficient to produce the
needed lapse rate.

I will try and post a link to an image later this morning.

regards,
Tony Cristaldi
