Fate of more than 1,300 people unknown after savage cyclone hits remote
Pacific islands (Associated Press)

CANBERRA, Australia - The fate of more than 1,300 people on two remote
Pacific islands was unknown Monday after a savage cyclone swept through the
area, knocking out communication.
Cyclone Zoe swept over the islands of Tikopia and Anuta in the southwest
Pacific on Sunday morning, with winds possibly gusting up to 360 kilometers
(223 miles) an hour, according to the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center in
Brisbane, Australia.

The eye of the category 5 cyclone passed near Tikopia, the most populated
of the two islands, which lies about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of
Honiara, said Jeff Callaghan, senior meteorologist at Australia's cyclone
warning center.
