[Air Travel Problems]

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Northeast began to dig itself out Thursday after a
major snowstorm dumped up to three feet of snow in parts of the region,
disrupting air travel and bringing New England its whitest Christmas on
record.

A Japan Air Boeing 747 was stuck in the snow at Kennedy and had to be towed
back to the gate, said Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation
Administration. "Some areas in the western Mohawk Valley and the northern
Catskills may get as much as three feet of snow," the service said.

[Big City Records Fall]

Five inches of snow fell in Central Park, making this the first white
Christmas in New York City since 1969, when 2 inches fell.

Boston, which last had a record 3.3 inches of snow on Christmas Day in
1974, will see its biggest Dec. 25 snowfall since records began being kept
in 1871.

[Up To 3 Feet!]

Wednesday's winter storm brought high winds and dumped heavy snow from
northeastern Pennsylvania through New York and Vermont to southern Maine,
reducing visibility to nearly zero in places.
"This will be the biggest Christmas Day snowstorm on record," Eleanor
Vallier-Talbot, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service (news -
web sites) in Taunton, Massachusetts, told Reuters.

The National Weather Service reported accumulations of 12 to 20 inches in
many areas and urged people to stay off the roads. Scores of flights were
diverted from New York and New England airports, including John F. Kennedy
International and La Guardia, airport officials said.

"In a 30-mile wide band across Windsor and Rutland counties of Vermont, 12
to 18 inches of snow fell in less than six hours," the weather service in
Burlington, Vermont, reported.
