Wx-Matrix colleagues,
While not as significant a story as the snow/ice storm which raked
parts of the central and eastern U.S., central Floridians had some
downright raw weather to contend with today as a cold (albeit shallow)
air mass infiltrated the sunshine state behind a strong cold front
which sagged through central Florida this morning.
The fact that the air mass was shallow (<= 3KFT deep) resulted in
northerly flow at the surface being overrun by southwest flow aloft.
The resultant lift (what is commonly referred to as isentropic upglide)
led to a low overcast deck of clouds, with bases generally between
500 and 1500 feet all day.
24 hour high temperatures since midnight were generally within a
degree or two of the midnight temperature, and highs since 7 AM
were also no more than 1 or 2 degrees higher than the 7 AM temps.
Afternoon temperatures today averaged 25 to 30 degrees lower than
what they were at the same time Thursday, and were nearly 20 degrees
below normal.
Just to the north of central Florida this afternoon, residents who would
normally expect sunshine and afternoon temperatures in the lower 70s
were 'treated' to readings in the mid and upper 40s, with north winds
of 10 to 15 MPH.
Reminded me a little bit of upstate New York in the fall (my original home)
regards,
Tony Cristaldi
