Winter Storm Hits North Carolina Hard
:: Adam Arthur - WeatherMatrix Member
HIGH POINT, NC - The Piedmont Triad of North Carolina is feeling one of the
worst winter storms that has ever hit the area. Most major cities and
communities in the area are left in the cold and without power. Millions of
power customers across the state are feeling the effects of the winter storm
as they spend the night without power. (see list at the bottom of the
report). Duke power is reporting that 1.2 million customers are without power
which equal 57% of their customer base. Duke power has called in
reinforcements from other states to help restore power to customers. Most all
Local Schools across the triad have canceled classes for Friday.
The City of High Point is one of the many communities that took a
beating as a result of the storm. Three to six inches of accumulation of
ice/sleet/snow cover the ground. Many trees and power lines are down across
the city. Travel has become difficult for the 90,000 residents of High Point
as most all traffic lights and other systems coordinating traffic are down.
Mass Communication officials are also reporting transmitting difficulties due
to the icing of transmission towers. The City of High Point is reporting that
there is an estimated 74,000 customers without power which include, 45,000
Duke power customers and 29,000 High Point City Hometown Connection
Electricity customers. The High Point -Thomasville Chapter of the American
Red Cross have set up emergency shelters in each of the three cities they
serve (High Point, Thomasville, Jamestown) to provide heat and food to those
who are without power.
