From: smwincva_wxman{at}webtv.net
Date: Fri Nov 01 2002 - 01:07:28 EST

Winchester VA

October rain totalled 4.46" at my location. And while the last 7 of 8
days were unseasonably cold, the first 5 days we had temps in the 80s.

Monthly rain totals from the mid Atlantic region. For most stations, it
is the wettest Oct. since 1995. Also for many stations, more rain fell
this month than in the previous 4 Octobers combined.

My high was 37 the low 35º on Thursday. Fri we "soared" to 47º and
an evening low of 34º. No freeze warning was issued locally because
the growing season has ended & we have had frosts this season.

Temperatures & Precip, ending 8am Thursday. Two stations had small
amounts of snow on the ground.

And while typically leaves are past peak now locally, they are 10 days
to 2 weeks late. I saw the reason mentioned twice: Trees were in drought
mode in Sept (In fact i mow/bagged the leaves in mid Sept before mowing
the grass).

Then the rains came. And the warm weather stayed too. The trees were
invigorated, & stayed until the seasonable loss of sunlight, & the
unseasonable cold took it's toll in the last week.

Locally leaves are changing very quickly, are brilliant, & fall very
fast. I have i witnessed several sugar maples go thru this process in
under 2 weeks.

With gusty winds Fri night & Saturday night, many early trees will lose
their foliage this weekend. By next weekend, even the late trees should
be at or past peek.
