[STORMREPORTS] T.S. Edouard

From: Thomas Giella, FMCI (fmci{at}tampabay.rr.com)
Date: Fri Sep 06 2002 - 11:50:29 EDT

As T.S. Edouard was large and disorganized as most tropical storms are,
it's affects were wide ranging across the state, varying from little rain or
wind to 60 mph wind gusts and up to 6" of rain. The NE Atlantic coast was
hit hardest on Wednesday with gale force winds to 50 mph and 3-4" of rain.
Late in the day on Wednesday evening a strong feeder band raced across the
central peninsula from NE to SW, dumping heavy rains of 2-3" in a short
period of time and 60 mph.
On Thursday heavy rains fell from entrained squall bands as T.D. Edouard
exited into the Gulf Of Mexico near Weeki Wachee. Tampa, Clearwater, St.
Petersburg, Bradenton, Sarasota, Ft. Myers and Naples saw 3-6" rainfall
totals with many water spouts observed.
Fortunately the peninsula did not see widespread heavy rainfall, as all
drainage basins are flooded and rivers above flood stage. As I have traveled
around the peninsula this summer on business I have never seen such
widespread flooding and standing water in areas that would normally be dry.
It's worse then the flooding that accompanied the El Nino winter of 1997-98.
If a tropical system does manage to dump widespread heavy rains like
Hurricane Gabrielle did last September, a very serious flooding event will
occur. A note, many areas of the peninsula have seen 100+" of rainfall so
far in the first 8 months of this year. Normal yearly totals run at 55-70".
