SUVA (Reuters) - The South Pacific island nation of Fiji extended a high
alert storm warning for 24 hours on Tuesday as heavy rains and rising seas
started battering outer islands.
A severe storm, which developed off Australia's southeast coast and
battered Sydney beaches with big waves in recent days, was traveling toward
Fiji's southern islands, some of which have luxury resorts.
Fiji's weather bureau has forecast waves around 20 feet could hit the
nation's southern islands by Wednesday night, along with heavy rain,
causing widespread flooding.
"The low-pressure (system) has already brought heavy rains and a marked
increase in sea levels on outer islands and coastal areas," Rajemdra
Prasad, director of the meteorology bureau in Nadi, told reporters on Tuesday.
