A cold front rolled through the area with force last
night, as high winds caused power outages across
Northern Virginia and Prince George's County.
The gusts blew aluminum sheets from construction
sites, sent trees into power lines and caused a
transformer fire outside Inova Fairfax Hospital,
closing the emergency room for about 30 minutes.
D.C. police said a falling tree limb downed a power
line, which set two cars ablaze at 14th and Tuckerman
streets in Northwest Washington.
The front brought strong northwest winds, with gusts
of up to 52 mph at Reagan National Airport about 8:15
pmEST.
In Northern Virginia, 24,000 customers were without
power for several hours in Fairfax and Arlington
counties and Alexandria and Falls Church. Potomac
Electric Power Co. had 4,000 outages scattered across
the District and Maryland.
