BAGHDAD, March 18 (Reuters) -- Unusually heavy rain
brought the Iraqi capital to a standstill on Monday,
flooding streets and bringing traffic to a halt.
Witnesses said the storm lasted nearly two hours,
unleashing the downpour during the peak afternoon rush
hour, scattering pedestrians and forcing them to seek
shelter in doorways, bus shelters and shops.
Municipal workers were called in to help unblock city
drains overwhelmed by the volume of water, which
flooded many streets after a period of hot, sunny
spring weather lasting several days.
