Powerful winds gusting up to 60 mph fanned forest
fires in central Japan that chased hundreds of
residents from their homes Thursday.
Blustery conditions also toppled a baseball backstop
that injured seven boys and forced the postponement of
a professional soccer game in cities near Tokyo.
Meteorological Agency officials said winds in some
areas reached 61 mph.
Fires were also reported east, north and west of
Tokyo, Japan.
In Musashino city, outside of Tokyo, seven boys were
pinned beneath a 15-foot baseball backstop, including
a 9-year old boy whose leg was broken.
