Tropical Storm Dean surprises Caribbean with sudden ferocity

By PAISLEY DODDS, Associated Press - SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - As
the Caribbean's first tropical storm of the year fizzled above Mexico's
Yucatan peninsula, a second unexpected storm roared to life and
terrorized the region's islands with heavy rain and winds.
"It's raining way too much," said Victor Manuel Vazquez, a police
officer on the outlying Puerto Rican island of Vieques, where heavy
rains had submerged a bridge and caused flooding.
Some cruise lines just couldn't win with the two storms. The Century -
a Celebrity Cruises ship - changed its western Caribbean itinerary to
the eastern islands to avoid Chantal this week. But spokesman Michael
Sheehan said the ship was then forced to skip St. Maarten on Wednesday
because of Dean. When it decided to go instead to the Bahamas, cruise
line officials heard Dean was headed there next.
