Typhoon Pabuk spares Sakhalin Island of destruction

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Russian Far East, Aug 23, 2001 (Itar-Tass via
COMTEX) -- The powerful Pabuk Typhoon which wreaked much damage in
neighbouring Japan, limited itself to torrential rains in Sakhalin, Tass
learnt at the regional weather service on Thursday. Between 60 and 100
mm of precipitations fell in the island's south over 12 hours, while the
monthly quantity for August is equal to 94 mm.
