A thunderstorm, fed by dewpoints in the mid 70's, have dropped 2-4" of
rain over a large area of N VA, N & E MD & DC. I measured 2.4" in 1
hour, including .75" in just 15 minutes about 6pm! By 7:50pm the first
t-storm had generally drifted northeast of the region, Another cell from
Hampshire Co WV was moving SE into Frederick Co VA. Although rain will
continue several more hours, the heavy rains should be done by 9pm.
As of 7:50pm, my daily total was 2.75", or normal for a 3 week period in
Aug. It exceeded the daily record for precip by 4 times (POR 1959 to
1995, will check my records to verify that it stands.)
Water flooded nearly every street in town, and several thoroughfares
were closed about 90 minutes, and are now open. At least 1 of those now
open is till single lane. A PD officer reported water to be 8 feet wide
and 10" deep at the intersection he was working, after the heaviest rain
left the area.
Other noted items: A reported structure collapse, additional info stated
a living room ceiling fell thru. At 8:20pm, a building official was
enroute to check the damage. It was just north of the city limits.
A mudslide was reported in a construction zone just east of town. The
road was closed about 6:30m, & i believe it is still closed.
And several leaky roofs & flooded basements were reported.

I live on a 1 block long street, with no runoff from other streets. Yet
at the heaviest rate, water covered the entire street, up to 2" deep.
