Temperatures in the 90s and high dew points have combined to send the heat
index over 110 degrees across much of western and north central Iowa.
Conditions over central, east central and southeast Iowa will not be quite
as bad this evening. Heat indices in these areas will top out around 105
degrees. Temperatures will be slow to fall this evening over western Iowa,
but should cool enough to allow heat index temperatures to fall into the 90s
by mid evening. Over areas east of interstate 35 heat indices should fall
into the 80s and lower 90s by 9 pm.
These levels of heat can be dangerous if precautions are not taken. Persons
in the advisory area are advised to avoid prolonged physical activity
outdoors, or in poorly ventilated areas. During the very hot weather, take
frequent breaks and make sure to consume plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.
Listen to your body and slow down if signs of heat exhaustion set in.
Remember, numerous people die each year due to heat stroke.
