Winchester VA

Friday was a dreary one, w/ rain, drizzle, & fog. Visibility during the
day was 3-5 miles, falling to under 3 miles in the evening. The frontal
passage occurred just before midnight ending the rain. Little moisture
remains west of us, and i think now there is little chance of even SF's
here.

The low of 40.9 was at 8:32am, the high was 46.5, at 3:52pm. The
barometer fell from 30.12 to 29.86". Winds were L/V, w/ a PWG of 9mph at
11:41pm.

Rain Friday was .34", & since Wed has been .52". For Feb. the precip
total is at .70", which is 20% below the MTD normal.

No significant moisture is in the forecast. However light precip is
possible Monday & next Thursday or Friday. It will _much colder_ this
weekend, w/ fluctuating temps next week. However, temps in the 60s are
not part of the forecast.

I have a sister who lives in a northern suburb of Atlanta, and I give
her a "heads up" call when severe wx is forecast or imminent.

I gave her the risk factors for Fri about 2:30pm, which she got the
message about a hour before the storms hit. She did not realize the
seriousness of the factors [high wind damage threat, moderate tornado &
large hail threat].

I called again about 5:50pm, to let her know a strongly rotating
thunderstorm prompted a tornado warning 45 miles to her WSW. She was on
the other line, & shrugged off the imminent danger. She said she would
call back "a bit later", I told her i was about ready to eat dinner
upstairs, that I might be unavailable.

At 6pm, the Peachtree NWS office issued a severe thunderstorm warning
for much of the northern Atlanta suburbs. The warning was for a bow echo
producing surface winds of 75mph (& to 115mph aloft) moving east at
forward speed of 60mph!

This prompted the EMS to activate the tornado sirens. My sister called
back about 6:15pm, asking where it was, ect. As I was on the phone with
conditions rapidly deteriorated.

Hail & wind was making listening to the conservation difficult. I told
her to "assume the position" in the hall & hang tight, that passage
should be quick. I told her i would give a "all clear" call when it
passed.

I came back downstairs, & looked up the wx info. Although, the bulk of
he storm passed in under 15 minutes, i was uneasy giving the all clear
until the winds aloft subsided.

About 6:30pm, all seemed well, so i attempted her cell number, which was
knocked out by the storm. I called her via conventional landline.
She could not see how big the hail was, how strong the winds were, or if
she had damage in the yard or on the roof. But she did not have loss of
power, & everyone survived safe.

WSB radio reported 75,000 customers in the dark, & some may be w/o power
till later today. There were 4 injuries in Woodstock GA, where a
building's windows blew out. I thought i saw 2 rotations/ funnels in
Cherokee Co, but i accidentally erased that part of the tape, & can not
verify. Nearby the Marietta airport reported a sustianed wind of 44mph
during the storms.
I counted a total of almost 150 severe thunderstorm, tornado, & flash
flood warnings across the US Fri.

Severe Storms Strike Metro Atlanta
(WSB Radio) A fast moving storm roared through metro Atlanta early
Friday evening causing sporadic power outages effecting thousands. Even
though the storm packed winds in excess of 50 miles per hour, reported
damage was light and injuries were minor. WSB Meterologist Kirk Mellush
