Here is an article on the excessive rain in the Houston area last night.
Storms dump heavy rains, cause flooding
By Associated Press, 5/20/2000 15:05
LIBERTY, Texas (AP) More than a foot and a half of rain hit parts of
southeastern Texas in just a few hours, flooding homes and streets and
forcing residents into shelters.
Liberty, a town of 9,000 about 50 miles northeast of Houston, received 18.5
inches of rain between 9 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, said Brian Kyle,
a National Weather Service meteorologist.
''This is very, very unusual as far as the amount,'' Kyle said. ''The
storms didn't move very much. It rained over the same places over and over
for hours upon hours.''
About 70 people stayed overnight at a Red Cross shelter set up at North
Main Baptist Church.
''It got pretty bad,'' said Jim Clemmons, the pastor. ''We've had major
damage here.''
The thunderstorms also closed down air traffic in Houston and Dallas and
created marble-sized hail in San Antonio.
Kingwood, which is 24 miles north of Houston, received 9.14 inches of rain,
while Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport got 7.61 inches.
