Tom:
Wow, impressive wind velocity! I had no idea that such speeds were
encountered in the Appalachians of N.C.
The official world record wind speed is 231 mph at Mt. Washington on
April 12, 1934. Right now they are reporting 84 mph at 2:36 EST, peak 15
minute gust of 90, air temp. of -25.2F for a windchill of -95F....an Alaskan
would wear a longsleeve shirt, for sure!
All weather buffs should have the homepage of the Mount Washington
Observatory bookmarked, IMO.

A wind gust on Grandfather Mountain in the NW mountains of NC was
measured
at 184 mph this afternoon. This comes on the heels of a wind gust
measured a
couple of days ago of 161 mph.
The record is 195 mph recorded in the 1970's I believe. Not quite up to
the
Mt Washington record of 230+ (?) mph but impressive none the least.
